Integrated Community Malaria Prevention in Bulambuli District-TASO/Global Fund Project

The Integrated Community Malaria Prevention Project is a six-month initiative implemented through a partnership between Mbale CAP and the Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS (MNYPA). The project targets seven sub-counties in Bulambuli District identified as having a high malaria burden. Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in Bulambuli District, particularly affecting pregnant women, children under five years, and school-going adolescents. Despite ongoing district health interventions, gaps persist at community level in awareness, early detection, timely referral, and coordination between community structures and health facilities. These gaps contribute to delayed treatment-seeking behavior and continued transmission. This project was designed to strengthen community-based malaria prevention and enhance coordination between district health authorities, civil society organizations, and community structures. The overall goal is to contribute to the reduction of malaria incidence among vulnerable populations in the targeted sub-counties. The project adopts a collaborative implementation approach. Mbale CAP provides oversight, technical guidance, and coordination, while MNYPA leads community mobilisation and activity implementation. The District Health Office plays a central role in providing technical direction and ensuring alignment with district malaria priorities and existing health systems. Key interventions under the project include district stakeholder engagement meetings, orientation of CSO and community structures, community sensitisation sessions on malaria prevention, support supervision, and strengthening referral linkages between communities and health facilities. Through these activities, the project aims to increase knowledge and promote preventive practices such as consistent use of mosquito nets, early care-seeking for fever, and adherence to recommended malaria prevention measures. By strengthening coordination and empowering community actors, the project is expected to improve early detection and referral of malaria cases, enhance household-level prevention practices, and support the district’s broader malaria control strategy. The project runs from February 2026 to June 2026 and represents a collaborative effort to protect vulnerable populations and reduce the malaria burden in Bulambuli District.
