On 27th September 2021 Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS-MNYPA in partnership with Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum- UYAHF and PACE held a successful participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club meeting at UYAHF ADH Clinic on ending stigma around safe abortion and teenage pregnancy. Namatala is one of the wards in Mbale city known for teenage pregnancy, SGBV, unsafe abortions and early marriages. To address some of challenges young people under Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS and in partnership with UYAHF, PACE and Eastern Region Youth Network on SRHR and Gender equality held a participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club meeting on Ending Unsafe Abortion Stigma, Teenage Pregnancy, SGBV and Early Marriages. The interactive and participatory Young Mother’s Anti- Stigma Club attracted 45 mothers and girls at high risk of Sexual Gender Based Violence, HIV infection, Teenage Pregnancy, Unsafe Abortions and Early Marriages. The meeting aimed at creating a platform for experience sharing and learning between Adolescent girls and young women and health care providers on basic concepts of safe motherhood, proven strategies to prevent Teenage pregnancies and strategies to protect girls from Sexual and Gender Based Violence. The meeting was graced by the Team Leader of Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum Mr. Mwesigye Patrick who is a global SRHR Champion under the SHE DECIDES Movement. During the session, girls pointed out stigma, Misconceptions and lack of information on sexual reproductive health services as a leading cause to low uptake of family planning services hence causing unintended pregnancies. Young people spoke against biases from health workers which discourage them from using family planning services. Additionally, the cultural norms was sighted as one of the causes of gender inequality and in most cases undermining women’s body and ability to make informed own decisions. After the sessions health worker providers at UYAHF Adolescent Health Clinic took young people in understanding concepts of safe motherhood which included issues ranging from family planning including different types of family planning, possible side effects and how to address them. The workers emphasized the need to attend antenatal visits, delivering from a health facility under the care of a qualified health provider. Additionally the health workers equipped the young mothers with information on exclusive breast feeding, routine immunization, good feeding and detection of early signs warning of pregnancy. In the way forward, young people called for; 1. Team leader UYAHF pledged to continue offering a safe space through the UYAHF youth hub for young mothers to share freely. 2. UYAHF pledged to offer free youth friendly family planning services to all young mothers. 3. PACE to support formation of community based Anti-Stigma Clubs supported by UYAHF change Champions and Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS. 4. Mbale Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS to conduct Community Outreaches meant to increase demand, availability, access and uptake of sexual reproductive health services and information.
